Week #37 - Culiacan, Mexico

The week started off pretty great with super fun arrival day activities into the lovely city of Culiacan! Saying goodbye to the gorgeous west coast of Mexico was not easy, but it was time to move inland! We arrived and had a busy schedule filled with touring a museum about addiction, which was super fascinating. We also learned some traditional Mexican dancing and jammed out to a Mexican techno/rock band! Before our host families arrived, we had a press conference and were welcomed into the beautiful city of Culiacan.
This week I was hosted with Leslie (the Cast Manager with whom I have been studying under these past weeks) and Lina a super awesome girl from Canada and Belgium! We had a lovely host family with a beautiful neighborhood and house and the beds were actually like heaven. I have not slept so well in months. We had two host siblings - a 15 year old sister and a 17 year old brother who spoke pretty good English. Our host parents spoke no English so we had ample time to practice our Spanish, which is always great J I could almost swear to you that our host mom is a Mexican chef! The breakfasts were overflowing every morning and our dinners were 5 course meals and everything was always so healthy, delicious and plentiful! We felt very spoiled this week and we also had great bonding time with our host family! We talked in broken Spanish and translated into English for Lina. Each night at dinner we laughed as we took funny pictures and told stories. On host family day we walked in the beautiful sunshine along the lake to a restaurant where we ate a delicious buffet of Mexican food outside as we overlooked the lake shining in the sun. Later we went to another host family’s house in the nearby neighborhood and had a fun little evening gathering. We ended the night by going night swimming at a place that had 3 crazy awesome pools!
In Up with People this week, we felt like busy performing bees. We had 3 mini shows this week and then a double show day on Saturday. The only days we were not performing were Monday (travel day), Friday (Internal Day with the cast) and Sunday (host family day). It was also my last week as cast manager intern so I was personally an extremely busy bee!  I finished my internship, prepared resumes and cover letters to apply for UWP jobs, along with all the other normal weekly duties I do such as homework, meetings and doing the tasks for the committees I am on. In general I felt as though I barely had time to catch my breath. I was always doing something whether it was a 10 min break or a 2-hour lunch, I always had some mission to attend to.
Tuesday I attended my final planning session as an intern and then proceeded to do a mini show. Wednesday I had study abroad before another mini show. On Thursday I had classroom workshops before performing in a mini show and then on Friday we had a break from shows. As much as we love to sing and dance, it was nice to get away from the autographs, endless pictures and fame for a day. During internal day we practiced our Denmark and Swedish medleys and had cast university – a time where we do workshops for each other. We had a great workshop on gratitude, positive manipulation and appreciating each other, which was put on by the education interns and finally as second round interns we got to announce the final round of interns! We were dressed as super hero interns so naturally that is extra exciting! On Saturday we had a super long double show day and we were all in 80’s themed clothing to make it extra fun! Unfortunately, after the first show we had pizza for dinner and the meat on the pizza did not sit right. At intermission of the second show that expression about poop hitting the fan came to life! People were dropping like flies but in consideration of the “full house,” those of us who could, pushed through and we managed to put on those smiles and perform our best, despite what was going on internally! What a night to look back on and laugh and remember J
Two more weeks left in Mexico and then off to cold Europe! Time to soak up the sun and enjoy it while it lasts! Hello Obregon – adios Culiacan!

Week #36 - Mazatlan, Mexico

Well what a week. We were told of the utter beauty of Mazatlan before coming here, but none of us really understood until the bus pulled up right across the street from the incredible ocean view. J Instantly we realized why this is a tourist destination for so many people. It is stunning day and night and the view of the beach and ocean never gets old. We arrived on Monday like any normal travel day and when we stepped off the bus we were smacked in the face by the utter beauty and the intense humidity. We were all sweating almost instantly. We got a tour of Mazatlan on the roof top tour buses. We also ended the evening freeing baby sea turtles into the ocean at sunset. It was an incredible experience as we released over 200 sea turtles onto the sand to scurry, as if they were racing to their new home in the ocean waves. It was a very special experience and one of those things that only happens when you are a part of such an amazing organization like UWP. To top it all off we were all dressed in white and looked as though we were taking photos for a wedding of some sort. It was a night to remember full of awe, wonder and beauty.

This week I was hosted with my really good friend Erin and so we knew right away we would have some good times, which we did. It was super hot and our house was not air conditioned at all so we spent a lot of time in front of the fan, after a cold shower, in our bedroom, doing various tasks for our two different internships and then laughing a lot, or at times talking about deeper stuff as well. J It was time we both needed I think to catch up on our emotions and all that jazz. Our host family was sweet and we ate really good fresh, pretty natural stuff all week, which made me super happy. We lived very close to the ocean, but did not have a whole lot of time to spend there due to our busy schedules. However, host family day was like a little piece of paradise. We walked down the road a few blocks and pretty much had a mini resort to ourselves. Pools that lead almost directly to the ocean, little cabanas all over, all we wanted drinks and food throughout the day, hammocks swinging in the wind and even a bar in the middle of the pool. I am fully serious when I say this, we sat on bar stools in the water and had pina coladas. No wonder people vacation at such places, it makes sense now. J We were there from around noon until past sunset and the day just seemed to get more and more beautiful the more we really took in where we were and how blessed we are.

As far as UWP this week, well it was very busy to say the least. I felt a bit stressed for the first time this semester and it was mainly because of everything that I had on my plate, not just one thing. I had a lot of things going on, that I was planning and organizing in regards to my internship, I also had a big homework week, I was working on new things to perform in the show, applying for a job in UWP and to top it all off a lot of my close friends were having a rough week too so I was also an emotional support rock as well. Needless to say I was busy both mentally, emotionally and physically this week and I am hoping to get some of these “to do’s” off my list so I can get back to just enjoying. J

Tuesday we had an internal day and it was a ton of fun! We had a chunk of time where many people in the cast taught workshops such as self-defense, love languages, balloon making etc. It was a very neat way to showcase everyone’s talents and also learn from them. After lunch we had home team Olympics on the beach where we played and competed in various games and events as home teams. It was epic as usual and a total blast. We spent time in the sun and in the ocean together and just fell in love with Mazatlan and our cast as a whole. On Wednesday I had study abroad and we also had a very hot and fun mini show. Thursday we had our first show day in Mazatlan and I don’t think I have sweat as much as I did that day. I was drinking so much water, but never needed a “banos” break because I was sweating it all out! The show went pretty well and after I began to plan the second semester retreat with a few others and it got me very excited for the next leg of our tour. Friday I had one of the best community service days I have ever had in my whole 2 semesters with UWP. I went to this place called Casa Down, a school with for people with Down Syndrome, and interacted with the people there. We did a music therapy class with them after painting the roof-top and then we prepared a meal all together, had a dance party and all ate together. I really felt touched by all of their joy and I know I helped to change their lives that day. That night we went out to eat down by the boat docks and it was a gorgeous evening eating Mexican food outside as the sun went down. J On Saturday we had our outdoor show day where we may have sweat even more than before, which no one thought possible! We performed outside under the almost full moon and I realized just how lucky we are to be traveling in such an amazing way.

Sadly as the sunset this evening I said goodbye to the ocean, the last 3 weeks have been gorgeous beach cities and I wish I could spend another month on the beach, but alas tomorrow we head inland. So farewell Mazatlan, farewell ocean and farewell beach! Thank you for treating us so well these last couple of weeks! I will definitely miss you J Culiacan is the next city and supposedly it is even hotter – so let’s hope we survive it Cast B!

Week #35 - Los Mochis, Mexico

Well this week we made our way a little bit further down the coast of Mexico to a town called Los Mochis. It is very similar to Guaymas, because it is also almost directly on the beach. We had a nice long bus ride on Monday and arrived around 5pm. It was hotter than heck when we stepped off the bus and we were sweating within minutes J Leslie is back so its nice to have my staff member back, but it was also interesting to go from being one person to two again J I had to say goodbye to my good friend Jordan for a while because she was going ahead of the cast to be a PRI and help set up our first city in Denmark. That was really hard, but then I met my host family and they were great right off the bat.
My family this week was my mom and dad and then 3 siblings, Jose Manuel 24, Joel 19 and Paulina 15! Jose’s girlfriend, Fernanda, was pretty much like my sister by the end of the week and she is wonderful! I am going to miss them all very much. Jose and Paulina spoke good English and the rest of the family mainly Spanish. I was able to share all about my community, family, state and country with them and I had a great time getting to know them as well. The first night they took me up to the top of this mountain  to see the view of the city and then the next few days we enjoyed talking at the table etc. and sharing pictures and stories with both broken English and Spanish. They absolutely loved the show and now they love “Viva la Gente” (Up with People in Spanish) and all want to be a part of it. On host family day we rested and then went to the beach in the afternoon before a relaxing evening of goodbyes and laughter. As stated before, I am really going to miss them! Just when I begin to feel at home, they start calling me their sister etc. I have to go. Come on UWP? Can’t we just stop time for a little bit?
In UWP this week we were extremely busy everyday. On Tuesday we had internal day which was wonderful. We spent the time in an air conditioned room (key word is A/C because it was about a hundred degrees outside and the humidity makes it even hotterJ). We did workshops and had a student meeting with no staff, which is always a fun way to get to know each other better etc. On Wednesday I had study abroad and then we had a workshop created by a few cast mates on human trafficking. It was super eye opening and informational. On Thursday I got to feel like a staff member for the day and go to a planning session as a part of my internship. My mind was blown many times in the meeting as I watched and finally understood how they are able to plan logistics for 100 people and have everything be so smooth. It was incredible to see and I love learning about all the behind the scenes things. Friday we had an interesting day because a group of us went an hour away to do a mini show. It was a fun, but long day and we had a lot of time to practice dances and songs. Then on Saturday we had  our first outdoor show this semester and it was pretty sweet. It was a big stadium and there were easily 2,000 plus people there. The day was beautiful and as the sunset it was a gorgeous sky going into the show. We had a great show and then broke everything down and went home to our host families thoroughly exhausted J
Next stop is Mazatlan and I have heard so many great things about the beauty of the ocean and beaches. I am so excited to watch the sunset and see the brightest colors of orange in my life and I thoroughly look forward to more hot weather J! Yay! Here we come gorgeous Mazatlan! Our last beach city, you better make it worthwhile!
