Week #28 - Sheridan, Wyoming

First week on the road and I feel like I am myself again! Its like I am back in my environment. I mean returning to UWP in general felt that way, but staging was a bit rough and I didn’t always feel like the Misa I know and love, but now I am making a comeback and I am ready to rock!

So this week, as I mentioned before we took off on the road. Meaning we left Denver Colorado and header to Sheridan Wyoming to begin our 7 weeklong tour of the northwest region of the United States. We had a decent length travel day on Monday, about 7 hours and arrived in Sheridan just in time to meet our wonderful host families. It was a start to an incredible week to speak lightly. Saying goodbye wasn’t easy and a few tears were definitely shed leaving my new family in Denver as well as a lot of my Cast A cast mates. But Sheridan had a lot of fun things awaiting so I was ready to go.

For the beginning of the week and the end of the week I was hosted in Brekken’s house (who was my roommate in staging) with her and few other good friends from the cast and it was a blast. From the second we got our allocation cards to our last moments on host family day we laughed the entire time and if we were not laughing we were still thoroughly enjoying ourselves. Brekken has a younger sister Baylee and 3 younger brothers: Blake, Blayne and Bridger who are all so much fun and who we became very close with. Her mom Susan Baker– the head of the house – is sweet as can be and has been such a wonderful host mom as well as an incredible sponsor for UWP this week. In the host family we would enjoy games of hide and seek in their gorgeous house, we watched movies and had hot tub time as well. We also had hilarious meals together where laughter was the key ingredient. On host family day we ventured up to their cabin in the mountains and holy catfish! It was gorgeous and the weather was beautiful. We enjoyed a number of activities throughout the day such as riding four wheelers in the mountains, creating a family music video in various locations, having a picnic on the rocks while watching the sun set, room mate photo shoot in the mountain river, s’mores around the fire and ending with nighttime football boys vs. girls. Then it was time to head home to fulfill duties to get ready for leaving the following morning. I had a great week with my roommates and host family and we are trying to plan a time for them to come visit again in the coming weeks of the US tour.

When I was not with them (which was the middle of the week), my real family came to visit. The Grenier clan that road tripped to Wyoming consisted of Paul, Paula and Perla (immediate family of course) and then my relatives: Grandpa Orville, Aunt Cheryl, Annika, Kathy and her two kids Clayton and Sophia. We rented a cabin for 3 nights at the base of the Big Horn Mountains and enjoyed the rush of the creek next to us as well as the quick tube ride down the refreshing, clear water. I enjoyed introducing my family to all of my UWP friends and they loved the show of course. My parents also got the opportunity to share their gifts of chiropractic with my cast and they adjusted just about all 100 people. It also gave them a chance to be apart of a my UWP experience a little more internally and get to know my friends better and I think they enjoyed that quite a bit. And man oh man did we have a great show that night! Full of energy and the power was turned on! Saying goodbye of course was not easy of course, but it does seem to get easier each time, which I am not sure if that scares me or makes me happy. I am growing up I guess and I am not sure if I like that or not. J But with all that said it was so nice to see my family and it makes me realize just how much I love them.

Now in UWP this week, we had a busy week. We had a ton of CI days and I was able to help paint a house for Habitat for Humanity, which was a lot of fun because I was able to get to know my cast mates a lot better and being giving to the community at the same time. We played a game with words and songs almost the whole day and it just showed me even more that music is a universal language that includes every single culture and country. I had study abroad on Wednesday and I got a lot of work done. We also had some internal time as a cast to prepare for culture fair and our anti-bullying workshops. This week we had two show days and they were both packed full. The show went great and the cast is just getting so much closer and improving in so many ways. As we transition from staging to being on the road so many things change and we have to adapt to new routines etc. I am so proud of Cast B because we are doing so well and bonding so well and I feel like we are finally beginning to mesh as a big happy family. I am so excited that the fun has just begun and that so many more adventures await.

Week #27 - Denver, Colorado (Summer Staging 2013)

Well, well, well where do I even begin. This week was crazy! It was what we call production week in staging, which means all we do is the show. There are no workshops and everything we do throughout the day has to do with rehearsing the show etc. So with that said the energy was high, the pressure was on and all sorts of emotions from excitement to all sorts of nerves were flying around the cast. We did have one session where we got meet in our home teams and it was the perfect thing because the activity that our home team did was just what we all needed. We wrote all our negative emotions and feelings and frustrations down on a ceramic plate and then we got to smash them against the wall. It felt so good to let it all go like that! And then let all the positive energy flow in J

We actually made a lot of changes to the show in the last few days before opening night and just 2 days before our first show it seemed as though nothing was ready for an audience. Dances were not ready; solos were not ready and so and so forth. But as the saying goes “the show must go on” and that is just what it did. And by some miracle it was fantastic. We all did our very best and worked super hard and it was a fabulous show all around. We had two shows that day and the second one was a full house, so the energy of the audience helped everything a lot. Also a whole bunch of my cast mates from Cast A 2013 (last semester) traveled to Denver for the weekend so having their smiling faces in the crowd helped me to perform better than ever. It was so nice to see them and it felt like I was right at home when we had a little get together and were talking about lives and last semester (even though it was just 2 months ago!). All in all the weekend within UWP was awesome. Great shows and I really love Cast B! We are ready to take the show on the road for sure and start touring. Now the real fun begins!

In our host family his week things were busy of course. We stayed a little later in the evenings and so the delicious family meals continued and the movie nights and the laugher and good talks. We actually got to go to Cirque du Soleil again for free because the company manager loved UWP and being involved in it while we were here in Denver so she arranged for everyone in the UWP to get free tickets as well as their host families. We had almost front row seats it was amazing. We also got the pleasure of meeting another one of the artists and coaches from the show Amaluna” when they came into to talk to the cast. In general I feel so at home here in Denver with my host family the Kochevar’s and saying goodbye tomorrow morning is going to be painfully hard. I feel so apart of the family and saying goodbye to roommate from Mexico this morning killed me so I can only imagine tomorrow. We are having a delicious Thanksgiving Feast for our last family meal and then I get to go say goodbyes to all my friends from Cast A that are visiting including one of my closest friends Amilee. So none of that will be easy, but I am sure the night will be filled with laughter and tears and stories and fun of course J

So here is to the end of staging as a second semester. I made it through and it was not so bad after all. Of course there are always ups and downs in life, but if what I am dealing with right now is the worst thing for me in life at the moment, well then I am pretty darn blessed. No let me say that again. I am extremely blessed and I do not have enough words of gratitude to express the way I feel. Here we go Cast B on our tour around the world!

Week #26 - Denver, Colorado (Summer Staging 2013)

Week number three in the staging process with Cast B and things are in full swing. Everything is picking up and is at high speed now. The week went by so fast can I barely remember which days were good and bad. Of course everyday in a program such as UWP is good, but this week has been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. As we begin to put the show on stage, everything is high pressure and it brings back memories of last semester and old friends. So with everything at such a high intensity things I have had a few stressful moments, but for the most part things are still great. I am having a blast getting to know all the new people. I have noticed how different I am coming into this semester compared to last semester and it is very interesting to analyze. I do a lot more observing than I thought I ever would, but I still manage to lead, just in a different way that is not as bold and out there. As second semesters we are doing a really great job of guiding and leading by example, so if nothing else seems to be working, we know that we are doing our best to help.

So this week started off with speed. We met our director from New York, his name is Humberto and he came in ready to work. We had a few different workshops this week, but a lot of the time we were cramming all the songs and dances and getting everything perfected before getting on the stage on Wednesday. We had a fun guest speaker who talked about the UWP “fish bowl” and we also had a great evening with the cast, which we call “Culture Jam”. It is a fun night where all our different countries can perform something to represent their culture. It is always super fun and just a great time for the host families and fellow cast mates to learn a little bit more about each other’s cultures and countries. We had our first couple of run throughs where we put everything together and it was a bit rough, but by just the third run through things were beginning to smooth out. We have one more week to get everything together for opening night and I have complete faith it will happen. This coming week is going to be even more crazy and hectic, but we will get through it and then in just one week we take off on tour J So everyone is super excited and awaiting the anticipation of leaving and seeing what life is like on the road.

So with one week left I am starting to realize I have to say goodbye to my host family really soon and the more I think about it the more I don’t want to leave. I have a new home in Colorado and saying goodbye will be hard especially after I have become so comfortable with my roommates and family. This week we spent a lot of nights together around the dinner table and having an entire family event that we called “The Zac Efron Movie Marathon”.  Man it was enjoyable! We also went late night swimming one night and ended up at a family friends house where we sang around the fire and roasted marshmallows. On Sunday as a special treat they gave us the amazing gift of taking us to Cirque du Solei “Amaluna”. It was so mind blowing that I spent most of the show with my jaw dropped and I did not even try to fix it. I was speechless and thus have no words to describe it. It seemed as though we were watching aliens perform. The rest of our host family day evening was delightful as we had a delicious dinner with host family friends and cast mates. We even did a mock performance to practice! A fun filled, jam packed day but somehow relaxing! Here we go into our last week of staging! Yikes! Hold onto your hats!
